Expressing Myself Through Art

From December through April, while the St. Mary's Center Winter Shelter is open, guests attend daily wellness classes covering a variety of topics. One of these classes is a creative arts class where seniors are encouraged to express themselves through art and poetry.

Shelter guest Robin enjoys the creative art classes. And with the help of his case manager and the daily wellness classes, Robin has changed his life for the better. He's now receiving SSI and is able to start saving for housing. Through his art, he has been able to find his voice and express himself in ways he never had before.

Homeless since 2011, Robin has lived a hard life. But, as he says, "Since coming here, I haven't had any struggles. They've helped me get in places and do things that I couldn't do on my own."

Robin has been addressing his depression and is caring for himself better than he has in years.

As Robin says, "I'm not looking back on the past because I'm not going there again." And he isn't. His persistence has paid off and as our shelter closed at the end of April, Robin secured housing!
