St. Mary’s Center provides money management services for our homeless and formerly homeless participants. The program is similar to what many people do by having regular bills electronically paid out of a checking account, with a financial management component.

Social workers develop a workable monthly budget with our seniors who request this program. St. Mary’s receives their SSI, Veterans pension, General Assistance, or Social Security check and then pays all the senior’s regular bills like rent, utilities, and a monthly transit pass. The social workers allocate personal cash as designated in the budget.

We have found that this program helps senior participants stay on track. It assures them of uninterrupted rent payments, light, heat, transportation, and money for groceries. Low-income housing providers are much more willing to rent to homeless seniors with this program in place.
