Today on Juneteenth, we celebrate the richness of African American history, music, dance, art & food. St. Mary’s Center asks that we reflect on the reason why we observe Juneteenth.
More than the end of slavery in America, let us be think of how far we have come, and how far we have yet to go. Let us act on eradicating today’s systems of subjugation through a collaborative effort.
Consider that was is needed is what john a. powell’s, Director of the Othering and Belonging Institute calls Bridging which “means acknowledging our shared humanity, rejecting that there is a “them,” and moving towards a future where there is instead a new “us.” For when we bridge, we not only open up to others, we also open up to change within ourselves – where we can participate in creating a society built on belonging.”
